Further Abstract Video Experimentation (Iphone)

 The following videos consist of further video experimentations which I had taken on my Iphone using different style lenses to experiment with the different effects I could get. I also did some experiments using both of my Sony camera which can be seen on the memory sticks I hand in. The lenses which I used on my Iphone were hard to use within a video format, especially when close up to an object which affected the quality of the video. If I am to continue to experiment further with my phone then I will try to take more time to understand how I can frame my videos in order to get the best outcome. After experimenting with my Sony camera's I did prefer the quality of them over the videos I did on my phone. The issue over the sound quality does affect my work though. Some of my videos sound grainy and very low in quality. To get around this I will experiment with using my phone to record the audio and use the cameras strictly for the video aspect.  

Abstract Video Artists

Mary Lucier

Mary Lucier is an American video artist who is known for her focus on video installation since 1973. Her mixed media video works explore themes of landscape as a metaphor for loss and regeneration. This can be seen in her works such as Dawn Burn, Ohio at Giverny and Wilderness. I chose to look into Lucier because I related to her work in terms of using landscape as a metaphor. Landscapes to me symbolise my ideal freedom where I can be truly alone and at peace, away from the constraints from society.

 Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is one of China's famous artists who is known as an activist, architect, curator and filmmaker. He is also knows for his open views and criticism of the Chinese government. I chose to look into Weiwei because his work focus on his environment as well as China's political issues which is something I am interested in exploring in the future. I also find his work rather inspiring and makes me want to share my voice with those who cant be heard.

Pipilotti Rist

Pipilotti Rist is a Swiss visual artist who is known for creating experimental video art and installation art. Her work is described as surreal, intimate, abstract art and is often categorised as feminist art. Her work is multi-sensory, and includes overlapping imagery that is highly saturated with colour. . My current video work is abstracted by fractured light and colours which reminded me of Pipilotti’s video art.

Abstract Video Experimentation

The following videos were made shortly after my critique where I had spoken about the abstract photographs I had made. The motivation behind these videos was to experiment creating abstract imagery but with a different medium. Video has been something which I have been wanting to experiment with for quite sometime now. For these videos I chose to record the windchime which is located in my kitchen. I wanted to capture the light fragmentation which it creates. This space is where I go to think and the windchime is a source or grounding and relaxation. These videos are quite disorienting which is something I have felt constantly since my Nanan passed away. To develop this further I am going to set up a camera and let it record that space for a longer period of time, in order to capture the daily atmosphere of that environment.  

Abstract Photographers

 Aaron Siskind

Aaron Siskind was an American photographer who was best known for his black and white photography which focused on surfaces and objects. His work has been described as sculptural, vast and painterly due to their lack of scale or context. I chose to look into Siskind because his photographs inspired me to start looking closer at the surfaces and objects which surround me. I began to start examining surfaces of glass object to find patterns which were created by a small amount of light. 

Wolfgang Tillmans

Wolfgang Tillmans is a German photographer whos work focuses on observations of his surroundings. His photographic practice focuses on diaristic photography, large scale abstraction and commissioned magazine work. 

"I want the pictures to be working in both directions," the artist had said. "I accept they they speak about me, and yet at the same time, I want and expect them to function in terms of the viewer and their experiences." This is what I want to get across within my own photographic practice. A photograph is just a flat image and the story behind it doesn't entirely matter to me unless the viewer and take that image and relate to it some way within their own lives. 

Frances Seward

Frances Seward is an English photographer who creates large spacial photographs. Her work is inspired by Asian art and culture, as well as tranquility found in nature. I chose to look into Seward because her the technique which she uses to create her pieces, is similar to how I create mine. She uses her camera to capture the wonder of glass and natural light which is what I experiment with. Glass and mirrors have been something which I have found fascinating since I was young. To me there are a window to another world which is filled with refracted light and colours. This is something which I like to capture within my own practice which can be seen within my previous project called "The Highstreet". 

Abstracting My Home Environment

The following images are park of a collection of photographs which I didn't think I would end up going back through and talk about. During a recent critique in which I was explaining my project and how difficult it has been trying to move forward with both my life and work since my Nanan passed away, my tutor and several others caught a glimpse of these and wanted me to show them. My work till now has been filled with photographs which failed to communicate what it is I was feeling. Ever since my Nanan passed away I have felt nothing but confusion, and disorientation, and felt like I was here but not at the same time. I can hear things going on around me but my eyes failed to see. The photographs below were the first photographs which I had made since my Nanan passed away. These photographs were about me trying to communicate to myself what it is I was experiencing. I wanted to express myself in some way and show the pain that I was going through at that specific moment. It felt almost instinctive to make these photographs. When I brought up these images to the critique for the first time I felt that I had something which I could expand on. I had people stating that they could see the pain that I was experiencing and it affected them in some ways. They could look at these photographs and associate them within specific moments in their lives. This critique was the most emotional one that I had because I had to reflect on the first part of the project which was about finding my freedom and using it to confront mortality, to now exploring living without clarity and grief. 

To move forward within my project I am going to try recreate this technique and continue to make these abstract photographs.
